About the Author:

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Julie grew up in a house full of women – she has three older sisters. As you can imagine, there was no lack of drama… or romance. Her mother enrolled her in a book club as soon as she began to read and it was the small spark that ignited her voracious appetite for the written word. Because of Julie’s early immersion in literature, she found writing came quite naturally. In high school, she won multiple writing contests and was the proud senior editor of The Tiger’s Tale – her school newspaper. During her college years, however, she longed for a challenge. “Reading and writing felt like second nature to me, so I looked for a way to flex my mental muscles,” she recalls. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Julie began teaching advanced high school mathematics. “I loved working with the students and facing the challenges of the classroom, but I longed for the occasional snow day when I could race to the local book store, buy two or three new novels, and curl up in front of the fire to read.” It wasn’t until a fortuitous move to Chicago that Julie once more returned to her first passion. Now Julie loves to travel the world looking for views to compete with her deadlines. When she’s not writing, she enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, cooking, petting every dog that walks by her, and… reading, of course!

EXCERPT:

“Who do we have here?” A deep, gravelly voice at my right drew my attention. My breath hitched and my body heated when I spotted the sexiest man I’d ever laid eyes on. I’d always been a sucker for a man with salt and pepper hair. Damn, he filled out that navy t-shirt nicely. My eyes traveled his full length before returning to his face. I flushed at the amused half-smile he wore at my perusal. It took me a moment to remember he’d asked me a question.

“Pe-Penny,” I stuttered, almost breathless as the heat in my face intensified. I don’t remember blushing this much before in my life. Fake it ’til you make it was my mantra. I stood a little taller and attempted to gain the confidence I typically displayed with chauvinistic surgeons.

“I’m Marcus.” His secret smile remained as he reached out to shake my hand. When I placed mine in his, he squeezed it firmly, and I thought I felt his thumb gently caress mine, but he pulled away before I could be sure.

“Nice to meet you.” The words came out a little shaky.

“So, what brings you out to play with us today?” His voice dropped suggestively.

Maintaining my barely-there confidence, I answered his question. “I’m curious about domination and submission. I figured this was the best place to gain some knowledge.”

“Knowledge about what?” Marcus asked, showing true interest.

Everything. I wanted to know what it felt like to give up control.

To just feel and not have to think.

To be dominated.

To have someone fulfill needs I didn’t even know I had.

I wanted to find my happily ever after, damn it. Sadly, I didn’t know how to express any of this.

I shrugged my shoulders. “Whatever someone will teach me.”

“Sweetness,” he murmured, “I’d be happy to teach you anything you want to know.”

After being betrayed by my own, I found myself banished to a crap-hole city in the northeastern part of America, a disowned Bratva royal in hiding, wanted by the Mafia for crimes against a Don.

I’m simply biding my time, plotting my return to Russia to reclaim my family inheritance and my Bratva throne from my little brother…

But then I met her in some dingy bar with terrible music and even worse alcohol.

What is better than returning to Russia to oust my brother and reclaim my birthright? Doing so with an heir already secured in the soft womb of a gorgeous woman.

I will abduct her. I will seduce her. I will breed her. And then she will die, as tradition dictates. So why am I finding myself envisioning a future with her by my side?

As for my little malishka, she dreams of freedom and yearns to escape my claim. But I will never let her go. Only death will part us now, and how soon that happens depends on her.

EXCERPT:

I would not shoot my fucking little malishka. She just needed to get her act together before I took her back to my bedroom and taught her some fucking manners.

“Sign it.” I glared at the marriage license on my desk.

Honestly, I was just as happy to forge her signature, but I had a point to prove.

The priest stood by the door and watched this all play out in patient silence. I could almost guarantee that this was not his first shotgun wedding. Plus, I was paying him handsomely for his trouble. As for Roman, his eyes bounced between me and Sloane like this was a tennis match. But even he knew this situation was too volatile for him to intervene.

My malishka would find no allies in this room.

The hate in her eyes would haunt my dreams for the rest of our lives, but I had to do this. I needed to stake my claim on her. Mind, body, and soul.

We were the darkest of soul mates. I knew I was forever seared into her mind since the day I kidnapped her. Her body was mine from the moment I’d impregnated her. Her soul would never forget mine now that we were bound together in the eyes of our deity.

Now I just had to make it legal in the eyes of American law.

“Malishka,” I growled. “You are either with me or against me, and if you are against me, you will not like what I will do.”

Sloane pressed her forehead to the barrel with flashing eyes. “Go on! Do it. If you’re going to kill me, stop being a fucking pussy about it and get it over with.”

She was trembling, her beautiful body shaking despite her bravado. She was scared. And she should be. But she was also smart enough to know I wouldn’t kill her…

Yet.

Not while she was carrying my child.

My cock hardened in my slacks. Fuck she was beautiful. Even defiant and afraid, I wanted to bend her over and rail her. Her fear was like an aphrodisiac to me.

I shifted into Russian to thank the priest for his time, reminded him of the very generous sum I had donated to the church earlier that day, and promised to drop off the signed paperwork. I then told Roman to see him out.

Once we were alone, I glared at Sloane. “Are you going to sign it or not?”

Stunned, I saw that she was nibbling on her lip like she was contemplating her options. There weren’t any fucking options.

In order to keep her focused, I pulled back the hammer.

Eyes widening in alarm, Sloane wrapped her arms around her belly as if to protect the baby and screamed, “Fine! I’ll fucking sign it!”

Tears poured down her face as she snatched up the pen, scrawled a half signature on the line, then threw the writing device down. She then stared blankly at me, as if to ask, “Are you fucking happy now, asshole?”

I took in her radiance, her heaving chest that showed my name etched into her skin, the way the light sparked in her watery eyes, her quivering lips so full and kissable.

I had broken her yet again. But I also knew how to put her back together with two words.

“Good girl,” I whispered.

She covered her face and slowly crumpled to the floor, as if the weight of my words were too much to bear. She sobbed uncontrollably, pouring out all her frustration, anxiety, and grief into the rug.

I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. She tried my patience, true, and I let her get away with shit I would never allow another, but love was nothing if not complicated and dramatic.

“You don’t love me. You’ve forced me to marry you, and you don’t even love me.”

Her words hurt my heart, as did her tantrum.

This stress wasn’t good for her either. It wasn’t good for her or the baby.

Conlin slapped an open palm against the shifting sensation beside his heart and massaged his chest. Jeanette stood from the table, nodded, and aimed for the exit. He searched in every direction and backtracked into the closest shop. Posing as a shopper, he picked up a candle and handled it, peering over his shoulder, and watched the man leave the property.

Conlin waited a couple of minutes before exiting the store. He strode toward the bar entrance, and she ambled down the corridor, almost cruising right past him.

“What’s the story?”

Jeanette halted and glanced up. “Conlin…” She fidgeted and twisted her hands together. “I dropped off your laundry and got distracted.”

“A meeting is more than a mere distraction.”

“Did you follow me?”

“Hold on now. I came downstairs to shop for clothes and thought we were all going to dinner.” Heat spread up his neck and across his face. “Instead, you’re dining with the man who’s hunting for Thomas and was searching for relics in Ireland.” Conlin tossed his arms heavenward.

“Yes, I can explain.”

“How could you sit there in his presence after all he’s done to us and knowing he’s likely responsible for yer brother’s disappearance?”

Jeanette gripped the front of his sweatshirt and tugged, stretching the fabric. “Let’s talk.”

Conlin’s limbs hardened at her assertive gesture and shadowed her down a spiral staircase. She yanked him toward a secluded corner beside a large potted plant, close enough for him to lean into the curves of her body. He rolled his shoulders, allowing cool air to flow under his collar.

“His name is Geron Leclerc. He’s behind everything that’s happened, and I don’t trust him at all.”

“Then why did ya join him for drinks?”

“That’s what you think of me?” A wrinkle deepened in her brow and her eyelashes flew high.

Conlin shook his head. “I… I’m confused about what happened.” He still needed to sort out his thoughts about Jeanette. Brave, tenacious, compassionate…

“Geron forcefully escorted me into the restaurant, and I remained in his presence to determine his motives.”

“His intentions are obvious; he’s using you to locate Thomas.”

“Of course. He asked about the map too and threatened if I refuse to cooperate, he’ll withhold specifics about his business dealings with Tom.”

Conlin stared at her, and for the first time her eyes reflected a helplessness hid inside. Her body trembled against his and he slipped an arm behind her back. Ever since he met Jeanette, he tried to assist and protect her, yet failed like he had frequently with Kera and Saoirse. Don’t make a bollix out of yourself again.

“The good news is Thomas must’ve evaded Geron and his men. I’m sure he’s hiding out and safe now.”

“Yes, Conlin.” She cheered him on and bumped his biceps with an elbow as if he scored a winning goal for the Football Association of Ireland. “And if we find Tom first, we’ll have leveraging power.”

“I’ll support you in any way possible, within reason, for the safety of Saoirse.”

“We should’ve gone our separate ways earlier,” she said in a serious tone, and her grin vanished. “It’s best if we work on getting you home and, in the meantime, keep your distance from me.”

A hollowness wafted through his chest. Jeanette lowered her eyelashes, and Conlin raised her face by positioning a curled finger under her chin. Now he perceived the depth of her care for him and Saoirse as a radiance shimmered in her eyes. An unnerving push of blood coursed throughout his body. If only he possessed the courage to confess, he cared for her, too.

“I appreciate yer concern for us, but I’m not going anywhere until you’re safe from Geron.”

SNEAK PEEK:

Nova was sixteen when Katerina Makris and her son, Nikos, came to work at the winery. The moment Nova first laid eyes on the mysterious boy with fierce eyebrows and a sharp jaw, her first crush manifested. From her secret perch behind the kitchen door, her knees literally shook as if the world was moving beneath her.

She watched intently as Katerina and Nova’s uncle carried on a conversation in Greek. Nova remembered very little of the language since her father’s death, but her uncle was able to converse with Katerina at a comfortable level. Nova hadn’t known he was fluent in her father’s native language. She was even more surprised the way her uncle treated Katerina like an old friend.

Both mother and son were striking, with eyes so dark they swallowed their pupils, olive-toned skin, stick-straight noses, and luxurious raven hair. Katerina’s loose waves bounced around her shoulders when she walked. Nikos wore his hair neatly trimmed around the sides, and longer on top. He was attractive in a way that made her belly swell. She held her breath, waiting for Nikos to speak. She was very interested in anything and everything the tall, handsome young man had to say.

Later that afternoon, while Katerina was trained in the kitchen and Nikos cleaned tables, Nova perched on the walnut bar top where soon customers would occupy stools across from the small oak and steel barrels containing the award-winning varieties of wine. She studied Nikos from afar as he worked, appreciating his Led Zeppelin t-shirt and dark classic jeans paired with old-school skater sneakers. Although lanky, he moved with the confident swagger of a grown man, and the muscles in his arms flexed impressively as he scrubbed each table. She’d only seen him smile once, but the flash of his bright white teeth as straight as piano keys revealed behind his generously rosy lips was enough to make her heart swell and her stomach tingle with excitement.

She was grateful she’d finally have someone around who was close to her age. Even better, she had a chance to talk to him without anyone else listening in. Her aunt was tending to the grapes that were nearing harvest, and her uncle was helping London perfect the pattern required for her next belt in Tae Kwon Do. The chef and other wait staff weren’t scheduled to come in for another hour, and the only other employee on the clock was in the kitchen with Katerina.

When she thought about approaching Nikos, nerves bubbled through her like a sparkling wine. Most of what she knew about flirting came from years of watching her aunt and uncle’s disgustingly affectionate relationship, and the sappy romance movies she sometimes watched with her aunt. She wanted to believe in love, but she was also cynical that anything could end with a happily ever after. Her parents had been madly in love, and their ending was nothing short of a Shakespearian tragedy.

“So, new guy,” she finally called out, hoping he couldn’t detect the tightness of her breath, “where you from?”

Turning away from the table, his eyes nervously swept past the kitchen before meeting hers. Their alluring darkness caused her heart to flutter against her ribs with the force of a bird’s wings. She suddenly understood the longing she sometimes heard in musician’s voices when they sang about love.

“Mykonos—ehhh…an island…in Greece.” His voice was as deep as her uncle’s, and his accent was rich. Every word he uttered sounded romantic. As they echoed through her head, she became motionless—all except for the widening of her eyes.

“Wait, did you say Mykonos?” A flicker of excitement passed through her. “That’s where my dad was from.”

Nikos’s dark, thick eyebrows rose. “Yes. Your father…he knew my mother. They were…ehhh…friendly. Since they were very young.”

Nova’s pulse sped. What else did he know about her father?

“Really?” Crossing her arms, she mirrored his high-browed expression. It seemed her uncle’s list of secrets was never-ending. “How did you and your mother end up here?”

“Your uncle…very kind. When we leave Mykonos, he tells my mother…ehhh…he can help.”

Interesting, Nova thought to herself. How did her uncle know her father’s childhood friend well enough to offer his help? For the first time since she had been torn from her family’s home in California, she believed she may actually have found an avenue leading to the truth about her parents.

Divider_031 My Thoughts

*ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. *

If you haven’t noticed by now but it has been a very long time that I have reviewed any books. I cannot decide what I want to read anymore but when I came upon this book on Netgalley, I requested it immediately. This book looked so interesting, and you know what. I was right! I love reading Ghost stories. Though they need to be spooky and there has to be a creep factor.

I loved reading this book. I think I read it within a week. Though with my busy schedule I find it so hard to read and review the books. This book had a perfect level of mystery, and I loved all the creep factors. Green House Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I just wanted to know what would happen next by each paragraph.

Now this story is set in 1980 and it follows Andy, a freelance writer. Andy accepted a job to write a piece about an abandoned house on the request from Lillian. She had to stay at the house while writing the piece and Andy had to write what she thought happened to Lillian’s younger brother. Lillian’s younger brother has vanished when she was still a young child. Andy views this as a once in a lifetime opportunity but memories from her past start to overwhelm her. The darkness around the house isn’t helping the situation either.

Now if you haven’t noticed from this review already but I was hooked from the very first sentence. The only reason why I did not give this a five-star review WAS because I started to piece this story together in the middle of the book. As I love anything with mystery from to books to movies and TV series. I don’t like to piece things through in the middle of a story but at the end.  Overall, I loved this book, and I will most certainly reread this book. I cannot wait for more books from this author.

Goodreads / Purchase

EXCERPT:

“You said your name was Jackie? Life is full of crazy coincidences, I guess. Jake had the strangest tattoo, and I’m remembering now that I’m almost certain it said Jackie.”

All the air was suddenly gone from the room. Jackie couldn’t breathe.

“A tattoo?”

“Yeah. So unusual. I would never have seen it except that I got this thingamajig to attach to my toilet that was supposed to help with . . . well, not important. It was supposed to be easy to install, and I thought I could do it, but it absolutely did not work the way the instructions said it would. Every time I turned the water valve back on, water sprayed everywhere. I thought I’d need to call a plumber, but Jake stopped by and said he’d be happy to look at it.”

Mr. Riga chuckled softly, shaking his head and briefly closing his eyes. “He worked on it for about 45 minutes and made it work in the end, but he was completely drenched.”

His smile broadened in memory. “This was last February, when it was still cold, so I told him he wasn’t going outside in wet clothes. I made him take everything off and gave him sweatpants and a shirt to put on and told him the least I could do was wash his clothes. He said it wasn’t necessary, but I didn’t want him getting sick on my account, and he eventually gave in. So he stripped right there in the hall” —Mr. Riga pointed to the small hallway off the kitchen where a door, presumably to a bedroom or bathroom was partly ajar— “and I saw it low on his belly. I was afraid it was a bruise and that he had hurt himself with the wrench or something, so I asked about it.”

Mr. Riga sighed again, and a look of complete exhaustion passed over his face. “He was such a sweet but serious young man. Not the type you’d expect to have a tattoo, especially there.” He looked slightly embarrassed but went on to finish his story.

“Anyway, he said it was the name of the girl he’d loved and lost, and he’d put it in a spot where only he would ever see it.”

For a man sunken in grief, he’d been able to tell an animated story. Through her mesmerized attention, Jackie could see a resemblance to the gregarious and effervescent Danny she had never really known but heard so much about. It was his words, however, that had her biting her lip hard enough that she only stopped in surprise when she tasted blood.

She and Leo had joked frequently about getting tattoos. Several of their friends had them, and Jackie had teased Leo about going together one day and getting them in places only the two of them would ever see. But like so many other plans, that one had vanished when Leo had died.

“What kind of tattoo was it?” She had to know, despite the odd look shot her by Nadine.

“I didn’t get up close to see, since I’d only meant to make sure he wasn’t hurt.” Mr. Riga reddened slightly, the spots oddly sweet on his otherwise pale face. “But he was a nice guy and saw I was curious. He drew a picture of it on a piece of paper. He knew I understood music because I’d told him I played the violin. He said it was something he’d doodled long ago and only had made into a tattoo one night after he got stupid drunk.”

He smiled at Jackie and Nadine. “Whoever that Jackie was, she must have been pretty special. When he talked about the tattoo, he was almost like a different person. But after that night, neither one of us ever mentioned it again.”

“What was special about it?” Nadine asked, and Jackie was grateful for her friend’s curiosity. There was no way she could have forced her voice to work.

“Well, he’d drawn a small musical staff.” He looked at them. “Do you ladies know what that is?” When they nodded, he continued. “And you know what a G clef sign is?”

Jackie nodded, not breathing, while Nadine just shrugged. “He made the core of the clef sign stand out as the letter J and then had the rest of the letters of the name Jackie going up the staff like small notes. It was quite beautiful and unlike anything I’d ever seen.”

But Jackie had seen it. Years ago. Years ago, miles away, and in an entirely different life, the young man she had been in love with had sketched just such a design when they had joked about getting tattoos. They had never gotten them because Leo had died.

Except apparently, he hadn’t.

BOOK BLITZ ~ Green House Haunting by Olivia York

Green House Haunting: An Andy Watts Ghost Column
Olivia York
Publication date: September 29th 2022
Genres: Mystery, New Adult, Supernatural, Suspense

A terrible tragedy dead and buried. Can a young woman dig up the haunted truth without falling into madness?

Andy Watts needs a break. So when the struggling journalist is asked to revisit a fifty-year-old mystery, she jumps at the chance to move into an abandoned house and honor her long-gone mom by becoming a respected reporter. But she’s shocked when she discovers not only did a polio-stricken boy disappear from within its rooms, but his mother took a fatal tumble down the stairs.

Stonewalled by the locals and unnerved by unexplained events in the eerie home, Andy fears the town would rather bury evidence than admit one of their own could commit murder. And with the ghostly image of a youngster in leg braces persisting, she’s terrified by hints that the awful answer is calling from beyond the grave.

Can Andy deliver justice for the voiceless before she becomes the next victim?

EXCERPT:

Green house stood solemnly in a noiseless field of overgrown vegetation. The dim rays of daylight disappeared in the distance beyond, darkening the front while sharpening the jagged exterior outline with a looming violet glow. It rose above the ground, perhaps two floors high, but a lack of windows at the top told Andy it may not have an attic to speak of.

The house drew her closer. The windows appeared somewhat new, the lining freshly painted white. It contrasted the worn, splintered wood on the verge of collapsing from the weight of a perched bird. At the base of the sagging stoop was the frame of a crumbling, rusted bicycle, rendered useless by the rain and condensation.

Andy climbed the front steps. Two, three, four steps upward, each one creaking an undecipherable note of an ominous melody. An unraveling front door mat read “Home” in tattered, fading letters.

This isn’t so bad.

Andy winced, unable to swallow her own lie. Quickly, she found the key in the envelope before she could change her mind and turn back. The shiny silver looked brand new compared to the decrepit bronze lock on the door. Studying the door closer, she spotted the new keyhole. A stern-looking deadbolt glinting a couple of inches above what must have been the original lock.

She pushed the door open, and the weight dragged it all the way open to gently bounce off the interior wall. Andy peered inside, but her feet stayed glued to the mat outside the door. The interior contents were fuzzy in the fading light, yet she could spot the three glinting hooks on the wall for sweaters and hats. A little deeper inside was one wing of the house, and to the right was another. In the center was a semi-carpeted staircase leading upstairs, where what followed remained unseen around the corner.

There was nothing particularly extraordinary about the home. She was no expert on houses made in the ’30s and ’40s, but it looked about how she’d expect. The ceilings were low, and the wooden floor was dull. However, Andy couldn’t help but feel something was different. That there was something in plain sight she couldn’t see. She stood motionless at the door, searching for what she thought was missing. The house stood, too, waiting patiently.

EXCERPT:

Jasmine

“He’s a nice guy, his name is Andrew Rodd.” The door pushes open, and Drew appears. I walk to his side and he moves closer to the woman that helped raise me. He’s holding a hanging wisteria floral arrangement.

“Grandmother, this is Andrew. I call him Drew.”

He smiles and takes over the greeting. “Hello, Grandmother Carrie.”

Wow, he is claiming her title as if she is his grandmother. She is grinning. “Andrew, are those flowers for me?”

It’s her favorite flower and color.

“Yes, ma’am.” He is a breath of fresh air in her presence. I worried too much about these two meeting. My grandmother is upright, studying Drew.

“Purple is my favorite color. I am sure my baby girl enlightened you that wisteria is my favorite flower.”

He grins. “Yes, ma’am, she did. It’s a flower as full of mystery and beauty as you are.”

“Jasmine, this young man knows about flowers.” She has a smile full of delight growing on her face. “Find a place by the window to set them and you have a seat and stay a week.” The room fills with laughter as the fear of disappointing her rules diminishes.

“Where are you from, young man? It doesn’t sound like my baby girl found you in Paris? You sound like you have done traveling, but not too far off from around my parts? Where are your people from?”

Drew sits in the chair next to me. “I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, my parents still live here.”

She smacks her lips. “Is that right?”

He smiles looking in my direction. “I met your baby girl in Atlanta.” I believe he is enjoying calling me baby girl the way he emphasizes it.

“Is that right?” Her eyes drift to the top of her head and turns back with a stern eye in my direction. Oh, no this might not be a good remark.

“This is not that guy from high school… hmm? I told my girl not to get involved too fast. Chantal told me everything about that boy. I never met him in person.”

My grandmother is fiddling with her hand. She talks as if I am not present, gaining Drew’s attention. “No, Jasmine didn’t bring him around me. But it seems like he must not have had a tight grip on her heart seeing you are here with her instead of the other.”

I drop my head in my hand and Drew grips my leg. “Perhaps, he was only there to keep her company until she met me.”

Her eyebrows rise. “Andrew, you sound confident over there and I see you touching my granddaughter’s knee.”
